When a Death Occurs

There are few things in life more traumatic than the death of a family member. When a death occurs, there are certain tasks that need to be done depending on where the death occurred. The one thing you need to remember is your emotional state will be compromised upon the death of your loved one. We suggest that you call on another family member, a friend or neighbor to support you in making important decisions.

Death at Home

When a death occurs at home, family members should:

Contact The Local Authorities

Police and/or emergency personnel.

Contact The Individual's Physician

If he or she was under doctor's care should be notified.

Contact The Funeral Home

The funeral home will need to be notified so that we can respond promptly to pick up and care for your loved one. If your loved one was in the care of a hospice program, a hospice nurse or caregiver will give family members instructions and procedures to follow.

Death in a Health Care Facility

When a death occurs in a hospital or nursing home, there is little the family needs to do other than call us. The facility staff will take the necessary steps to make sure all requirements are met.

Out of State Death

If the death takes place out of state, there is no need to contact a local funeral home in that state where the death occurs.

Sometimes added expenses may result depending on services desired. Call us directly and we will make all the necessary arrangements with funeral agents we work with throughout the country.

Advance Arrangements

If a death of a loved one is anticipated, it is wise to begin thinking about the arrangements in advance. We often speak to family members prior to the death to start the process of obtaining information and discussing service options. This will provide a rational and unemotional time for making numerous important decisions. Just call us for an appointment or begin the process by filling out our planning ahead form.
